The Horror, The Horror

Jeffrey Overstreet, who pointed us to the Narnia trailer, also links to this trailer for the Tim Burton remake of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

I ask you, was this really necessary? Is there any reason to do a remake of a film as wonderful and timeless as Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory? Johnny Depp is a talented actor, no question about it. But Gene Wilder was terrific in the original. The dark streak running through the original film (and present in Roald Dahl's book) is surely what attracted Burton to the story. And as Jeffrey Overstreet points out, in this film Depp looks eerily like Michael Jackson. Good old fashioned nightmare fuel as the 'bots would say.

Also, that music is hideous. Danny Elfman's soundtrack to Edward Scissorhands (also a Tim Burton/Johnny Depp collaboration) is fantastic (so is the film). But if the song on this trailer is any indication, bring earplugs to the movie.

I'm sure I'll end up seeing it, perhaps just out of curiosity. But I'd rather see the original get rereleased to theaters.
